So one of my favorite "math teacher friends who I've never met" is opening a lingerie store. I'm taking this as an opportunity to ask someone all those sizing of underwear questions I never quite understand.
Already learned that the thing about a cup size being the same if you increase a band and decrease a cup size is actually true. Something to do with cups being proportional and not a size.
I'm fielding other questions to ask in the comments. (Mostly so I have a place to remember where they are when I get around to asking my friend.)

1) Now I need to understand how the formula for going from your measurements to band/cup size is related to that proportional measurement thing.
I should definitely clarify that this does not mean that you will simultaneously fit a 32E, 34D, 36C etc. The band sizes exist for a reason (and is where lots of support comes from) so while the fit of the cup in these bras will be very similar, the fit of the band is definitely changing and too big = band riding up your back and zero support.
Sometimes playing with sizes this way can help you find a bra that fits if something was just a little bit off, or if a specific style runs small/big. In general though, stores with limited sizes will tell you you can do this so they can find something that "fits" you, when really it doesn't fit at all.
